Month of October

Shadows

Over the past few weeks, we have been exploring shadows using the overhead projector. We provoked the children's thinking with the overhead projector, and a variety of animals. The children worked on placing the animals on top of the overhead projector and observing as the figure appeared on the wall or screen. The children noticed when they moved the animal on the overhead projector they animal also moved on the wall.

We wanted to see how the children would react to the plastic people being projected on the wall. The children's strategies were quite different. Many of the children worked on pairing the people together in groups or by height. Once they placed the people on the projector many of  the children walked up to the wall and compared themselves to the projected image.

Ramps

The children have shown an interest in the ramps. They began placing their cars at the top of the ramp and watched as they traveled down to the bottom. Many of the children experimented with the where the placed their car on the ramp and then how much force they used to push the car on the ramp.

The children then went on to explore how different objects moved down the ramp. We gave the children small wooden blocks, cardboard tubes, cars, ball and a rock. The children placed each item at the top of the ramp and watched as it did or did not travel down the ramp. The children noticed that the car, cardboard tube, and ball were able to make to the bottom of the ramp. While the rock and block only slide down the ramp a few inches.

Mixing Paint

Mrs. Turfah and the children have been exploring paint mixing. Mrs. Turfah provoked the children's thinking with paper, yellow and red paint. The children used their hands to combine the two colors together. The children used several different strategies for combining the paint such as smearing the paint with whole hand, using the tips of their fingers and slowly dragging the paint together, while others liked to dipped the tips of their fingers in the paint creating dots. Some children preferred exploring paint mixing with a paint brush instead of their hands.
